IT has survived the muddy fields of Glastonbury Festival and it has been played in front of thousands of people at the iconic Royal Albert Hall.

But now Jamie Cullum's grand piano could find a new home in a Birchwood music teacher's classroom.

Jazz-pop singer Jamie has teamed up with Yamaha to donate his piano to a deserving school, charity, youth group, community centre or choir.

And The Heath School in Runcorn has made it through to the final six after head of music Alison Dale created a song and video appealing for the department's untunable 30-year-old piano to be replaced.

Alison, who started her teaching career at Lymm High School, said: "Some of the notes ring on their own without pressing anything and one of the pedals doesn’t work. It’s seen better days basically but the thing is it gets used by the kids all the time.

"Making the video was just a bit of a laugh and we didn’t really think much about it and then we found out it had come in the top six in the country."

Alison, who previously taught at Padgate High School, and her students, who play some of Jamie's songs in their lessons, are now eagerly awaiting December 15 when the winner will be announced.

She said: "It’s an amazing feeling to be in with a chance. Out of hundreds of entries it’s funny to think we have this little piano that could win something for us. The kids are really excited.

"Just to have the chance to play on a grand piano will inspire the kids. It would just lift the whole school.

"It will certainly be a talking point. I think we’d have people coming to see it. It’s been everywhere with him so it’s like a piece of memorabilia.

"It’s like a museum piece. It is surreal to think it could be in our classroom."

Jamie added: “This piano has accompanied me through some of the most important parts of my life in the last 10 years.

"I have written songs on it, I have recorded albums with it, I have toured the world with it.

"It may have fallen in the mud at Glastonbury festival, it may have been used as a drinks table on numerous occasions but it has also been on stage at the Royal Albert Hall and was the piano I wrote Gran Torino on. I am thrilled to be able to give it to a worthy home."
