THE M6 around Warrington will be closed for two nights as work begins for a £1 million repair project on a bridge at Winwick.

It means the M6 will be closed between J21 A and J23 at Newton-le-Willows, from midnight - 4am, on Wednesday, November 5, and Thursday, November 6.

The Highways Agency says 'wear and tear' repair work on a motorway bridge at J22 at Winwick will begin on Friday, November 7.

The bridge structures support the junction roundabout above the motorway carriageway.

A clearly-signed diversion will be in place between junctions 21A and 23 using the M62, A49 Winwick Road, A579 Winwick Lane and A580 East Lancs Road.

All repairs will be carried out overnight and are due to be completed before the Christmas break.

There will be two further overnight closures of the motorway later in the year, at the end of the project.

Mark Mosley, Highways Agency project manager, said: “This is routine work to repair the reinforced concrete bridge piers and keep this busy junction in good shape.

"To minimise inconvenience to drivers we are restricting work to overnight periods but for safety reasons drivers travelling through the junction under the roundabout bridges will find a temporary 50mph speed limit and narrowed lanes.”
