A TAXI driver was assaulted after an argument over a fare broke out, police have confirmed with officers now investigating.

According to Cheshire Police the taxi driver - a 46-year-old man - was attacked on Crown Street at 6.05am today, Wednesday.

It is believed he had picked up two men and a woman, before an 'altercation' over the fare.

The victim suffered minor injuries and did not need to visit hospital, say officers.

His mobile phone is missing following the incident and police are investigating whether it was stolen.

Police are investigating and said enquiries are at an early stage.
