RESIDENTS in Latchford had security devices installed in a bid to combat the recent rise of shed break-ins.

Shed alarms and timer switches were fitted at houses across Shelley Grove and the surrounding areas by Warrington Borough Council (WBC).

Improved lighting and fencing have also been earmarked for the future to ensure the area becomes as safe as possible.

Police community support officer Tom Reid acknowledged the current problems but is hopeful of a reduction in crimes after the latest move.

"The aim of this is to get the sheds more secure and make more people aware of the problem, we are not just scaremongering," he said.

"Even things like leaving a spade out in the garden gives people easier access so it is just about making it safer.

"I would not say that the rise in crimes has anything to do with the area. Hopefully though, with the new security and by raising awareness, it will come to an end."

Enforcement officers from Golden Gates Housing Trust and WBC neighbourhood workers were also in attendance to see other possible avenues for improvement.

"The residents can get together and get involved in neighbourhood schemes in the area," WBC enforcement officer Nicola O'Rourke said.
