WITH the winter weather creeping up on us, the majority of people will be hoping the days don’t get too cold – none more so than bricklayers.

Officially, if the temperature stands below two degrees and rising, building work with cement is limited due to the mortar mixture freezing instead of setting.

Stockton Heath bricklayer of 37 years, Peter Terron, who runs his own company in the trade, insists the key is to stay one step ahead.

The 53-year-old said: “It can be bad for us but in recent years we have only lost about 10 days a year so hopefully the weather is fair to us again this year.

“Obviously we make our money in better weather but if you plan ahead then you can ensure you have small jobs to do inside so you don’t lose out.

“I am naturally quite organised and that has certainly helped when it comes to business in the winter months.”

Peter’s son Ashley, who was crowned best brickie in the world in 2013 and now works at Redrow Group Services Ltd, admits in can be tough and recalled a time that he hopes will not be repeated.

“It is difficult as it is through powers beyond bricklayers’ control that determines when they can work,” he said.

“I remember a few years ago in a bad winter when we didn’t work for four weeks because the temperature never got above the required temperature, hopefully that doesn’t happen again.”
