POLICE are investigating after the manes and tails of two friendly horses were hacked off in a field next to Fox Covert Cemetery.

Owner Caroline Hesketh arrived at the field off Red Lane, Appleton, to discover horses Billy and Holly had been attacked at 7.45am today, Friday.

Parts of the cobs' manes and tails have been cut off, with pieces of hair strewn across the grass.

Warrington Guardian:

Mrs Hesketh said: "I don't think this is kids and I don't know how somebody could do that.

"My horses are well known in the area and people like them.

"Holly is the most affectionate and would go up to people.

"She had a lovely flowing mane and tail, but they have been properly hacked off.

"Billy doesn't go to strangers which makes me think this was someone who knows horses.

Warrington Guardian:

"Bill usually protects Holly and herds her away from trouble.

"Somebody has gone in the field and done this to them."

Mrs Hesketh has owned Billy for 21 years, but she got Holly in June as a pony for her eight-year-old daughter.

She is also called Holly, and has not yet been told of the attack.

Warrington Guardian:

The Grappenhall Heys Primary School pupil is collecting an award this morning at school, for fundraising she has done for St Roccos.

"This will be devastating when she comes home from school," added Mrs Hesketh.

"We just want everyone's help in keeping an eye on Billy and Holly."

Warrington South NPU is investigating.
