CAMPAIGNERS have joined forces with a national charity in a last ditch attempt to save Stockton Heath Primary School.

Campaigners hoping to save the Edwardian building have enlisted the help of the Victorian Society to protect the historic site.

The final decision to retain or bulldoze and rebuild the Edgerton Street school will be made by councillors on Thursday at the town hall.

Edward Kitchen, northern architectural adviser of the Victorian Society, said: "Stockton Heath Primary School is a sound, viable and much-loved building.

"It has served its community for nearly a century and adds a great deal to the character of the local area."

Opened in 1910, Stockton Heath School has served the community for nearly 100 years.

Plans to knock down the locally listed building led to a 5,000-strong petition,.while some supporters have been backing the new school plans.
