DIVERSIFYING is a buzz word for many industries.

But the Warrington and District Society for Deaf People is leading the way in the charity sector by expanding its home to other organisations.

And one such group which has now made the Deaf Centre on Wilson Patten Street its home is the British Deaf History Society.

Peter Jackson, from the society, said: “We collect lots of things that are linked with deaf history and also have a really good library.

“We have lots of university students who come to research for their courses here. Recently we had students come from Cumbria and even Texas - we have become recognised around the world.”

The range of objects which the museum stores varies from hearing aids, old memorabilia from deaf clubs through the years to important documents.

Among the exhibits are keepsakes which were given to Princess Diana, who was a patron of the charity.

The archive also stores donated items from deaf people to help the society better chart deaf history.

“We have got quite a lot of old hearing aids, a lot of people give their personal records so we can catalogue everything.” he added. “It’s the only one in the country.”

And they are always looking for new donations.

Peter said: “It would be interesting to look at how hearing technology has developed over the years with hearing and other aids.”

And the library not only hosts a wide range of books but also has art work including some special treasures found by members including Peter.

He said: “I was in a Swedish antiques shop and I recognised the name as knew he was deaf and my wife said are you sure and I said i was. They didn’t know the value of that painting so I bought it for less than it should be.”

The museum also provides a draw for the society to open up to a wider audience than those just in Warrington.

“We have a lot of deaf clubs who come to take a tour of the museum and then go to the deaf club as well,” added Peter.

“And we are really interested in opening up visitors from the community who have never been inside.”
