I REFER to the recent interest from the local MPs David Mowat and candidate Nick Bent regarding the everlasting traffic congestion that this town has suffered for the past 40 years or more.

One way to reduce the congestion is to reduce the number of traffic lights situated in the town.

For example, from the crossroads situated at Victoria Square on London Road in Stockton Heath to Brian Bevan Island via Wilderspool Causeway there are no less than seven sets of traffic lights.

This, together with a bus lane on each side of the carriageway, reduce it to a two lane carriageway from what was previously a four lane carriageway.

Another way to reduce congestion is to increase the phasing of traffic lights by increasing the amount of time the lights are on green to allow the free passage of traffic.

At some locations where pedestrian lights are incorporated in the traffic lights the pedestrian lights are phased longer than the traffic lights.

I appreciate some pedestrians need more time to cross the road due to health issues, but there has to be a fine balance between these things, the traffic has to keep moving not stop, start, stop, start.

Liverpool City Council has recently recommended the removal of bus lanes in the city because of the detrimental effect it has on traffic flow – this is an idea that should be adopted by Warrington Borough Council.

The bus service they provide is sub-standard and not fit for purpose because of the amount of routes they have withdrawn.

A serious overhaul of Warrington’s traffic congestion is well overdue and the residents of Warrington deserve better.
