FANCY being banged up in this joint?

After being transformed from a run-down, no longer fit for purpose police station, the former base for Great Sankey bobbies has now been converted into one of the area's self-proclaimed 'landmark buildings'...with plenty of residents keen to cop a look.

Estate agents Ashtons has put the 'Old police station' on Liverpool Road up for sale following Penketh developer Steve Price, from ATM Landmark, snapping up the property last year.

A large-scale refurbishment has seen the building converted from eight receptions, two bathrooms and no bedrooms to a large kitchen with 'lantern roof', dining and living area, utility room, four bedrooms, two bathrooms, three reception rooms and garden.

The description adds: "This is one of the most individual properties which very rarely become available and should be viewed to be appreciated."

Developer Steve Price added he saw the renovation project as an 'opportunity to make a difference'.

He added: "A lot of people have been curious over what the building is like and it will be a great family home with a bit of a back story.

"People don't want to feel like they're living in an old police station but we have retained some of the features as a reminder and you can still see where the cells were as the walls are thicker."

Officers moved out in December 2012 after 104 years on the site to a new station on Meeting Lane, Penketh.

Cheshire Police said the move was necessary as staff changes had seen more officers join the neighbourhood unit in Sankey but there are no doubt one or two officers who would be happy to move back to their old home after seeing the transformation.

Keith Logan, Warrington West inspector, added: “We’re very pleased with the new police station – it’s a modern building and more spacious than the previous one.

"The facilities are also better for the public as it now has a car park, private consultation room and a helpdesk which is fully staffed on weekdays.

“We’re happy to share the building with the Shannon Bradshaw Trust and form part of a central hub for the community of Penketh.”

The Great Sankey crossroads, at the junction with St Mary's Road and Station Road, had been in the Guinness Book of Records as the only junction in the country to have four Ps on each corner – a post office, pub, police station and parish church.

In more recent years, the post office was closed in 2005 and replaced with a property shop helping to continue the tradition.
