A GROUP aimed at breaking down isolation for older people in Warrington has been forced to find a new home after they were handed their marching orders.

Members of the Warrington Older People’s Forum say they are ‘disgusted’ by their treatment after they were told to move out of their current residence at Warrington Baptist Church on Sankey Street.

This is in spite of spending tens of thousands of pounds refurbishing the premises.

Treasurer Alf Clemo, of Dovedale Close, Orford, said: “Over seven years ago, the forum moved into the Baptist Church.

“We secured a ten year lease and an understanding that we would be very welcome and no reason why this should not be our permanent home.”

It was agreed that the forum would pay for the building's refurbishment instead of paying rent as the site was in desperate need of repair.

The 86-year-old added: “Since we moved in, we have spent £60,000 of funding and our own money to rectify the faults. It was in a terrible state.”

This included funding a fitted kitchen, new heating system and roller shutter security doors.

But in January, it was claimed the forum had breached its agreement but its members disagree and say it has worked in the same manner for the past seven years.

Mr Clemo said: “After having a free hand for seven years and the refurbishments we have carried out, the minister is now imposing rules in the use of the building.

“It is disgusting. I just feel like the people of Warrington should know how we have been treated.”

The forum, which is open to anyone aged over 50 and has been helping the older generation within the community for the last 23 years, has since relocated to the Pyramid and Parr Hall on a temporary basis.

The church did not respond to calls for a comment.
