BURTONWOOD has been besieged by flytippers leaving industrial waste, mattresses and furniture in derelict pub sites across the village.

The Elm Tree and the Bridge Inn have both be targeted by the environmental vandals who have used the sites as dumping grounds leaving villagers outraged.

Clr John Joyce (LAB - Burtonwood and Winwick) said: "The two pubs shut in January of this year and both were left derelict.

"In the meantime they have become a dumping ground. It must be a firm for loft insulation and they are dumping fibre glass there.

"I have had the fire service down there because there was a fire.

"There is also fibre glass that has been dumped in Collins Green by the Pear Tree pub.

"It's someone who is doing work in the area and dumping the stuff.

"It's a recurring thing. It's not just small flytipping, it's really big stuff.

"you wouldn't expect in this day and age people to use land like that."

Although some work has been done to restrict access to the pub to stop people continuing to leave waste on the sites it cannot be closed off completely from the flytippers.

"There was always an agreement as there are parking spaces being made available to the post office and chemist," added Clr Joyce.

Work has already been done to clear the sites by the developer who owns the land but Clr Joyce says the community wants to see development happen quickly at the sites to avoid the problem coming back.

It is understood the developer wants to demolish the buildings in the coming weeks but Clr Joyce wants to see the site developed quickly.

As the clear up job was done more than 100 bags of rubbish were taken away from the two sites.

"We are working with environmental enforcement at the council to tackle it," added Clr Joyce.
