STAFF at Cheshire Dogs Home have sent out a warning to anyone who has set up a collection point for the cause after a woman pretending to be from the charity attempted to take donations from Sainsbury's in the town centre.

Collection points for donations were advertised across Warrington over the weekend after the heartbreaking news around 60 dogs had been killed at Manchester Dogs Home began to spread.

The surviving pets were taken to Cheshire Dogs Home in Grappenhall leading to a widespread appeal for tinned food and blankets to help the charity care for the animals.

But today staff at Sainsbury's on Church Street in the town centre reported a woman claiming to be from the charity had arrived to collect the donations.

When they checked with the cause, nobody at Cheshire Dogs Home had any idea who she was.

A spokesman for Cheshire Dogs Home added: "It was lucky staff at the store checked with us first but we would never send anyone out just to collect a few items for us.

"Our team are currently arranging to liase with all the collection points and arrange times to collect donations in our van.

"Everyone has been so generous so we are urging anyone in charge of a collection point to only deal with representatives from the charity."

Collection points for donations in the town, which are still open include:

Sainsbury's, Church Street

Tesco, Winwick Road

Cats Protection adoption centre, Elizabeth drive, Padgate

QVC, Benson Road in Birchwood
