A £126 MILLION plan to relieve pressure on the town centre's congested roads and open up new development sites in Arpley Meadows have been given a going over by the public.

Last week the Warrington Guardian unveiled Warrington Borough Council's vision for how it hopes to create a new crossing over the Manchester Ship Canal and Mersey cutting through the undeveloped land around Arpley Meadows.

And along with that scheme work is soon to start on another crossing over the Mersey at Chester Road to Centre Park to unlock the south of the business park to further development and plans are being drawn up for further linkings to Slutchers Lane from the site to create another way to bypass Bridge Foot.

The news has been greeted with a mixed reaction from readers on our Facebook page and at warringtonguardian.co.uk.

Linda Chorley said on Facebook: "Something needs to be done peak time's a nightmare."

Craig Carless added: "I work all over the country and Warrington probably one of the worst places to drive through, constantly sat in traffic."

While Laura Leicester said: "Why has it taken all this time to come up with the same solution that everybody else knew was needed many years ago?"

But some readers said the most important thing is to get rid of the tolls on the new Mersey Gateway.

Peter Brown said: "Bridge Foot isn't capable of handling the traffic now or for the next 50 years so yes, we need new crossing over the Mersey and the ship canal. That's a no brainer.

"The really important thing for Warrington is getting our MP's and government to scrap the Mersey crossing tolls. Only this will free up the town and enable its future economic growth and success."

Laura Andrus added: "I'd rather they addressed the issue of why I should pay to cross a bridge I live closer to than half of Halton who get it free to be honest."

Meanwhile at warringtonguardian.co.uk some welcomed the plans.

kazrobo added: "Hurry up and do it, especially as more businesses are moving to the area and IF the Bridge St renewal project is a success this is something that needs priority!"
