GUNNER Harold Frederick Glover of Winwick Road was killed in action 98 years ago.
The news was delivered to readers in an article published in the July 13 edition of the Warrington Guardian.
In these words Sergeant Stanley H Dale tells of how Gunner Harold Glover met his death on July 6: “He was working bravely on his gun when a shell burst and a piece struck him in the neck.”
He states that the gunner became unconscious immediately after he was struck and died a few minutes later.
“Poor Harold,” he recalled. “He was the best liked gunner in the battery and he had been with me since his enlistment. He had grown very dear to us all.
“It came as an awful blow and has cast a gloom over the whole battery.
“He will be buried tonight and all of the battery will be there to honour our gallant dead.”
Gunner Glover was an ex-scholar of St Anne’s School as well as a frequent attendant of the church.
“He had a large circle of friends whilst in employment at the wire gauge manufactures on Winwick Road before he left to join the war where he had been at the front since November last,” added Sgt Dale.
