Travellers settle in Old Hall

TRAVELLERS have settled on Mary Ann Meadows in Old Hall, with residents claiming they have damaged the football pitches.

Several caravans and cars can be seen on the recreation ground off Westbrook Way.

Goalposts have been used as a washing line, while witnesses also say a 4x4 car was seen being driven in circles, churning the ground up.

The matter has been reported to Cheshire Police and Warrington Borough Council.

Warrington West NPU said it was aware of the issue and will be working with the council to ensure there is no breach of the peace at the site.

As the playing field is council-owned land, it is up to the Town Hall to instigate any eviction.

The council is preparing a statement.

It is not yet clear if the travellers are the same group that have settled in other parts of the town in recent weeks.

The dirty rats picked the week the pitches come back into use for training and the new season.. Just shows how disrespectful they are doing doughnuts on football pitches used by local children. Probably will leave human poo around as well as other rubbish. If they had more consideration then people would be more tolerant .

Goalposts? You'd use the cross-bar surely?

Easy does it, Daz - you're sounding a bit Gestapo with de-humanising language like that. Fully agree they should follow the same rules of common courtesy as everyone else, though.

Ah, sorry, just studied the picture more closely and, yes, the goalposts are supporting a washing line.

What kind of poo do the farmers use on their fields around there these days? What's that funny smell you get from the fields in the Burtonwood/Old Hall/Winwick area? Cant the farmers and the travellers come to some sort of arrangement regarding using the poo that they..er.. do?

Looks like a big field to me Daz..with bushes and trees around. I think you're trying to play the 'won't somebody please think about the children' card. I reckon if you were gonna do a ubend u-boat..if it was you know..touchin'..and you were miles from a toilet..you'd be in those bushes before you could say 'hunt for brown October'

Great analogy , it seems we still don't understand each other. The farmer idea is quite a good one. As for a one off bear in the woods bit of desperation then you would have a point. However I'm talking multiple poo's In an area that is used by lots of people in that community including children. I am not playing cards either.

WG, Daz has raised an issue here regarding the standard of sanitation for Travellers. Daz doesn't want to see any poo..I don't want to see any poo and i doubt very much that the travellers want to see any poo so can we start a campaign to improve sanitation for travelling folk. We also need to raise their levels of education and access to vital services such as health care. These people are living an existence similar to that experienced in the 1940s and they need help. Too many children dying young too many men and women not living long enough. It's time to change this situation but its going to take effort on both sides.

Cracker ! I only mentioned it as it was reported at a previous site used by travelers. Maybe you could extend your hand of friendship to them and collect it for the farmers if burtonwood.

You want to be careful believing everything you read in the paper Daz especially if you're going to attribute the behaviour of one traveller...or local person..or dog to all travellers in the country. Did you do any forensics on the poo that was reported previously? Could you identify which person or species it came from? Did you see it with your own eyes? Did you see it being laid down on the ground? The answer is no..and yet you would have us believe that all travellers are regularly out punishing t*rds on the green spaces of warrington.

I think that we're all liable to contribute the same ExRatRacer.
If you want to start a list of the travellers you know haven't paid tax please do, i'll make a list of non-travellers here
Gary Barlow
Howard Donald
Mark Owen
Colin Jackson
Terry Venables
Gabby Logan
George Michael
Michael Caine..ooh hang on he's a gypsy..you can have him.

The taxman believes more than 33,000 individuals and 10,000 companies are members of the schemes being used by those above
Between them they owe an estimated £4.9billion – equal to an average of about £114,000 each, although some are thought to owe millions of pounds in tax.

You are no doubt as outraged with these people as you are with the travellers and would run them out of town.

I don't know how many travellers avoid paying income tax..some will,,some won't. all gypsies and travellers wherever they live are subject to the same income tax and VAT laws as anyone else in the UK. P60’s and income tax return forms do not have a little box that you can tick that exempts you from tax if you are a traveller.

You think that doctors surgeries and hospitals are located at official sites??

Hopefully if one got caught short . Then one would avoid doing human poo near children's play areas. yes he did say that !

well if your fined for your dog pooping in public and not cleaned up then so should anyone.

plus well versed travelers should have chemical toilets which opens a whole different door on disposal.

Indeed. Why should these people void their bowels on a playing field without penalty while a dog can't without it's owner facing a well deserved fine?

I think it's high time that Warrington Council provided a site, with say, 100 pitches and associated washing facilities, for travellers who are just "oassing through".

Given the amount of development in the Chapelford, Westbrook and Burtonwood areas a plot of land for such use shouldn't be hard to find, and in the long term will probably save the council money, as they will no longer need to turn to expensive legal teams to try to move them along, not to mention the clean up costs which inevitably follow a successful eviction.

The current provisions for travelers within the borough are pitiful, and it really is about time that Warrington Council did it's fair share.

Combined with Daz's campaign for better sanitation this would be great. We are all liable for tax but you seem to think it's ok for celebrities to con the British public out of their contribution because why? Because they're famous and you love famous people? There's no officially site in Warrington, the sites mentioned are privately owned by Travellers there WBC with police assistance can't force them to move there. Widnes and a Runcorn both have officially transits sites which means HBC and police can force them to use them at a weekly rental cost.
National law should be changed to prevent illegal encampments being set up, I don't care about if they claim it's their right, they can roam the country for me but set up camp on a designated site and pay for the usage of it.
Page a, your blinked if you think the travellers clean up after themselves go to an area just after they have left and look at the mess. As for taking them bin bags, can't they buy their own? Or find a bin? As for toilets being delivered to them when set up, why should we? They can't use a site with toilet blocks why should we assist them?
They scream human rights, what about human responsibilities first?

I don't quite follow what you're saying? You want them to stay on official sites..which WBC don't provide?

I'm not blinkered and I have never said that.

Human Rights Act 1998 compels the Council has to act in a manner which fairly balances the rights and freedoms of all the individuals concerned including Gypsies/Travellers and local residents. All public authorities have an obligation to ensure that respect for human rights is at the core of their decision making. How is not providing an official site helping the Council to meet this obligation?

Under the Race Relations legislation, the Council is bound by the General Duty to eliminate unlawful racial discrimination, promote equal opportunities and promote good relations between people of different racial backgrounds. How are the Warrington Guardian and WBC working together to reach this goal?

Chartered Institute of Environmental Health recommends that “Local authorities should provide sanitation, water and refuse collection services to unauthorised encampments to mitigate threats to public health".

This seems to be quite a sustained media campaign by the local paper. It might just be because the Warrington Guardian like stirring you chaps up or it might be that they're lining someone up for a big announcement to reduce the number of illegal sites in the near future. Either way there's no need for everyone to forget their manners. I'm sure there's a solution but not if there's so much hate being whipped up. chill yer beans, they're just people

Ha. Your own outlook is rather narrow Pagey. I read EVERY DAY. I usually have around a dozen books out of the library at any one time, and I have co-authored two books. I suspect that I have more and higher qualifications than you too. For someone who tries to portray themselves as open-minded, you are quick to jump to conclusions about someone who's views you disagree with. I think you are very narrow-minded as you are blind to the poor behaviour of a significant number of that minority group under discussion.

Do any of the named people **** on our footy pitches & leave a trail of rubbish everywhere ? Although they fiddle their tax they still pay a **** sight more than anyone commenting here, unlike the Gyppo's who pay sod all.
Thanks Chadwick, saved me the job of responding to Pagey's response.
Go read a book, broaden your narrow outlook and then you won't need other people to answer for you.
I didnt know we had a dozen copies of mein kampf in Warrington. Calm yourself, you've had a had 24 hours thinking of your witty reposte you probably need a lie down

Yeah, Council should provide another official site to be ignored. Not in my backyard though! How about yours Pagey?

I think that we're all liable to contribute the same ExRatRacer. If you want to start a list of the travellers you know haven't paid tax please do, i'll make a list of non-travellers here Gary Barlow Howard Donald Mark Owen Colin Jackson Terry Venables Gabby Logan George Michael Michael Caine..ooh hang on he's a gypsy..you can have him.
Do any of the named people **** on our footy pitches & leave a trail of rubbish everywhere ? Although they fiddle their tax they still pay a **** sight more than anyone commenting here, unlike the Gyppo's who pay sod all.
Thanks Chadwick, saved me the job of responding to Pagey's response.
Go read a book, broaden your narrow outlook and then you won't need other people to answer for you.
I didnt know we had a dozen copies of mein kampf in Warrington. Calm yourself, you've had a had 24 hours thinking of your witty reposte you probably need a lie down

I think it would be a big mistake to provide these "travellers" with a site that has all the facilities. These people choose their lifestyle, do not pay taxes and generally leave a mess wherever they go. Why on earth should they be provided for? They will no doubt move on soon, leaving a huge mess for someone to clean up. All their licence plare numbers should be written down, they should be given a warning that if they leave a mess, they will be found and fined. I am all for helping those who need it, but to enable those who take advantage is wrong! By the time your council has made a decision, the damage will be done.
