BARROW Hall Primary School is set to be the first school to relocate to a new home under plans to tackle the schools shortage crisis in Warrington.

The school on Great Sankey is set to benefit from a new building on the Omega development, it has been revealed.

Although the blueprints have yet to be finalised, it is understood that the site is the frontrunner to house the school, which is currently based on Barrow Hall Lane.

The new building will create enough space to increase the school's intake from 75 to 90 children a year.

Earlier in the year, the Warrington Guardian revealed that 120 extra primary places were expected to be created in the town at five schools.

St Philip’s in Westbrook, St Joseph’s in Penketh and Barrow Hall, Chapelford and Park Road in Great Sankey were earmarked to increase their intake over the next three years.

But it remains unclear how many additional places will be created at each of the schools.

The extra places are aimed at tackling the growing demand for primary schools in Warrington West.

Clr Jean Carter, executive board member for children and young people’s services, said: “It is great news for the school and community. We are looking at the areas in Warrington where we know primary school places need to be created.

“The Omega site is our preferred option for the relocation of Barrow Hall because this is a site close to the existing school.

“We will be talking to parents and to the community about the impact of these changes and more details will be available at the start of the new term when we will be engaging with parents and the local community and getting their thoughts on this exciting development planned for the 2016 to 2017 academic year.”

John Littler, head teacher at Barrow Hall Community Primary School, described it as a ‘great opportunity’ for the school.

He said: “A new building on a new site so close to our current location means we will have all the facilities and space we need, which benefits the children from our existing community as well as those from the new development”.
