A CYCLIST is urging others to join him on the St Rocco’s Cheshire Plains and Peaks Cycling Sportive.

Will Birchall will be taking part in the ride in September in memory of a loved one who spent time at St Rocco’s Hospice.

Will, from Liverpool, said: “I’ve been cycling for just over a year and wanted to complete this challenge in memory of my Granddad - Fred Birchall.

“St Rocco's provided the perfect combination of support and respect which he needed back in 2009 when diagnosed with terminal cancer. This was an extremely difficult time for everyone, but I know Fred wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere else.

“Fred was a keen cyclist himself so when my mum spotted this ride it seemed like the perfect way to give something back.

“I’ve kept good care of his old yet immaculate bike which I sometimes ride, but will be using my newer one for the tough inclines of the Cat & Fiddle.”

The event has raised more than £35,000 for St Rocco’s Hospice over the last five years.

It offers a modest yet varied 60 mile route as well as a demanding 100 mile route.

The event takes place on Sunday, September 7 at 9am from Broomfields Leisure Centre, Broomfields Road, Appleton.

Places are £25 and all proceeds go to St Rocco’s.
