THEY came, they saw, they paddled all in the name of a good cause.

The annual St Rocco’s Hospice Dragon Boat Race saw 22 businesses take to the water at Warrington Rowing Club on Sunday.

High crowds turned out to cheer on the teams in the challenge which saw crews of 16 propel traditional Chinese craft using oars as a drummer beats the rhythm for the rowers.

The event saw a number of fierce battles on the water and this year the final was the closest run race in the competition’s history with 0.64 seconds between first and second place.

Each team raced three times before the final four battled it out in the final race of the day.

And triumphing once again was last year’s winners The Mighty Ducks - a team made up of individuals.

Helen Latham, corporate fundraiser, said: “The dragon boat race is such an exciting event, with lots of friendly competition and team spirit. We are so grateful to all of our teams for their wonderful support.”

All the money raised will got towards funding the work which St Rocco’s Hospice does for people with life limiting conditions.

The hospice needs to raise £3.2 million each year to keep its doors open.

The final results were:

1st The Mighty Ducks 01.25.12

2nd The Water Boatmen 01.25.76

3rd Carlsberg Dragons 01.29.26

4th Slimloaders 01.29.59
