THIS was the scene when some hapless criminals escaped during a mass jail break in Warrington but there’s no need to panic.

Their escape was all in the name of a good cause with teams from across the town taking part in first Cheshire jail break on Saturday to raise money for charity.

The event was organised to help fund a charity cycle to Tanzania and Zanzibar by Juliette Hassell from Glazebrook and Zoe Atherton from Hollins Green.

All cash raised by the women will fund medical research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a range of devastating conditions such as miscarriage, premature birth, brain damage and cancer.

More than 6,000 was raised as teams went to inventive lengths to cover as much distance as possible without using a penny of their own money before returning to The Black Swan in Rixton to celebrate completing the challenge.

Team Hilts picked up the prize for the furthest distance covered, arriving back at the pub by motorbike having reached Inverness in a biplane as well as commandeering a truck to travel more than 800 miles in 10 hours.

General manager of The Black Swan Stuart Wraith said: “When we were approached to run a charity event for Genesis research trust, we thought what can we do that’s different and gets people thinking about the cause.

“We had no idea it would turn into such a big and successful event and that’s all down to the support we have had.”
