VOLUNTEERS at Warrington Animal Welfare have been celebrating after being awarded £50,000 to build new dog kennels.

The charity, which is now based at the former Cats Protection site off Slutchers Lane, was handed the funding by charity Support Adoption for Pets.

They were selected out of more than 130 entrants after submitting an application and short video thanks to the help of pupils and staff at Penketh High School.

Janet Thornton, from the cause which was originally set up to provide financial support for pet owners on low income or benefits to help them to pay to have their pets neutered to reduce the amount of unwanted pets in the town, said she was delighted.

She added: “We can’t thank Support Adoption For Pets enough for this special donation.

“We also want to thank everyone who showed their support for us, especially those from the Warrington community and Penketh High School.

“We currently have more than 80 cats and kittens at the centre but we are proposing to make half of the centre into re-homing dogs and we cannot wait to start building our new kennels.”

The charity still needs £10,000 to complete the build and are calling for donations and volunteers to continue to help them reach their dream.
