MOTORISTS heading for the town centre will face a traffic headache on Monday as improvement works begin on Sankey Way, Cromwell Avenue and the Sankey Green roundabout junctions.

The A57 Sankey Way / A574 Cromwell Avenue scheme involves Cromwell Avenue being widened at the junction to improve pedestrian/cycle facilities, the removal of the bus lane on Cromwell Avenue to improve traffic flow, creating a 4m path on Cromwell Avenue for pedestrians and cyclists and the widening of Peace Drive to provide a separate right and left turn lanes with work taking place over night between 8pm and 7am.

Temporary road closures will be in operation during these hours and a diversion route will be signed.

The A57 Sankey Green Roundabout scheme involves four lanes being created on the A57 Liverpool Road approach to the roundabout and traffic lights being replaced.

Work will be limited to 9.30am to 3.30pm apart from carriageway resurfacing which will be carried out in the evening/overnight in conjunction with the Cromwell Avenue works.

Resurfacing works on Thewlis Street will be carried out on Sundays to minimise disruption to bus users and special buses will be in operation to continue to serve the stops along Old Liverpool Road.
