THE funeral of a 94-year-old war veteran, who died in a blaze which engulfed his Winwick home, will take place on Thursday.

Samuel James died in a house fire on Monday, July 7, at his home on Gerosa Avenue, Hermitage Green.

Fire crews were called to the scene at 2.50pm after a passing motorist raised the alarm but firefighters could do nothing to save him.

An appeal has since been launched to invite servicemen, women and veterans to Samuel’s funeral at St Oswald’s Church in Winwick to pay their respects.

The service will begin at 11am at the church on Golborne Road.

The church has limited seating but Samuel’s family have said everyone who wishes to pay their respects is welcome to attend.
