IT will be the first time a non-celebrity has presented the BBC Lifeline Appeal on Sunday so you would be forgiven for thinking that there is a lot of pressure resting on the shoulders of Sam Smith.

But just like she has done all her life, the 31-year-old from Lymm will take any challenges thrown her way in her stride.

Sam, who was diagnosed with Epidermolysis Bullosa the day after she was born, will be hosting the programme on behalf of DEBRA, a charity that supports people with her skin condition.

EB is a group of genetic disorders which can cause the skin to blister, tear and break out in sores at the slightest touch.

The former Lymm High School pupil said: “DEBRA has done so much for me in my life and this is a small thing I can do to repay them for everything they have done.”

Sam will front the show, which aims to shine the spotlight on invaluable charities such as DEBRA, and has been heavily involved with its production.

“I have been able to put my own stamp on the show and they have listened to what I have to say,” she said.

Sam has even helped with promoting the programme and even secured the support of Grammy awards-winner Celine Dion, who has helped to advertise the show.

Sam, who has met the talented songstress twice before, remembers feeling shocked to received a reply to her email requesting Celine’s help.

“I couldn’t believe it. She must get hundreds of requests like this,” said Sam.

But this is not the first time Sam is to appear on the small screen and was previously filmed for the documentary Stormchaser: The Butterfly and the Tornado.

The show followed Sam and her brother Keith as they travelled across American to tail tornadoes.

“It was so incredible. To see these kinds of sights just blows you away.”

The BBC Lifeline Appeal will be aired on Sunday on BBC Two at 3.30pm and on YouTube.
