THE iconic Mr Smith’s nightclub in the centre of Warrington looks set to be bulldozed.

Owners of the building, Salford Quays-based LPC Living Limited, told the council of its plans on Friday.

According to documents seen by the Warrington Guardian, the building will be pulled down on August 11.

Because the building, which has been closed for four years, is not listed or protected in law, the council has no say in the move.

Clr Steve Parish (LAB - Bewsey and Whitecross) is ward councillor for the area.

He said: “It looks like the council has little say in this matter.

“The buildings are a decent example of the period architecture but whether that is good enough to save it is another matter.

“Most people will have fond memories of it.”

Mr Smith’s was formerly a cinema before it rocketed to fame in the 1980s, attracting massive numbers of revellers each week.

The club staged the first Hit Man and Her ITV show in 1988, presented by Pete Waterman and Michaela Strachan.

More recently, it had short openings as Synergy and Halo in the late 2000s.

And the council had a failed attempt to buy the building in 2011 when it wanted to include the site in its plans to improve the waterfront area around the Mersey.
