GREG Mackey was a hit in two spells with Warrington Wolves.

One of his startling qualities was his durability and he holds the club record for most consecutive appearances, 98 between 1992 and 1995 before succumbing to a shoulder injury.

It will be 25 years next month since the bubbly little general made a stunning debut in primrose and blue.

After arriving from Canterbury-Bankstown on a short-term deal, the crafty Australian playmaker led eventual champions Wigan a merry dance at Central Park on the opening day of the 1989-90 season.

In fact, Wolves won eight and drew one of the nine games he played, including a Lancashire Cup Final triumph over Oldham at St Helens, before a lucrative offer took him to Hull.

He received the Harry Sunderland Trophy as man of the match in Hull’s Premiership Trophy defeat of Widnes in 1991 but was brought back to Warrington by coach Brian Johnson ahead of the 1992-93 season.

Mackey was skipper of the side that missed out on the championship title to Wigan on points difference in 1993-94 and led them to their last appearance in the Regal Trophy Final, a loss to Wigan at Huddersfield in 1994-95.

He clocked up the last 15 of his 123 Warrington games in the final season of winter rugby league.

Mackey also had spells with South Sydney (1980–83), Paris Châtillon XIII (1984-88), Illawarra Steelers (1984–88) and one campaign with Canterbury before spending seven seasons in England.
