WARRINGTON’S flood defences have proved their worth and should act as a catalyst for more works according to civil engineers.

The flood defences stretching 1.5km along Knutsford Road have set the benchmark for flood protection in residential areas.

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) argues the Mersey scheme demonstrates the need to invest in flood protection, in agreement with the ICE North West report who believe it should remain an investment priority for local authorities and the Environment Agency.

The Knutsford Road phase of the scheme safeguarded 1,500 local homes last year during one of the biggest Mersey tidal surges in years.

The Environment Agency and Warrington Borough Council paired up in a £23m project to protect more than 2,000 homes and businesses. Phases two and three will give protection to Woolston, Padgate, Kingsway North, Cinnamon Brow and Latchford East. Its completion is scheduled for spring 2015.
