HUNDREDS flocked to the opening of the new Aldi store in town to be the first through the budget supermarket’s doors today, Thursday.

Keen shoppers could be seen queuing around the shop, located just off Sandy Lane and Winwick Road, to be the first to bag a bargain at Aldi’s fourth store in Warrington.

Some had even camped out all night to make sure they got their hands on one of the one hundred golden envelopes containing a ticket to win prizes including a digital camera and a DVD player.

The first in the queue was Peter Jones, from St Helens, who had arrived at 7pm on Wednesday to be in with the best chance of picking up a prize.

The 13 hour wait was clearly worth it to Peter, who was not only the first person through the doors to complete his big shop but also went home with a 32" HD TV.

He said: “It was worth it but it’s been a long night. I decided to come to enjoy the laugh with everyone here.”

Christine Clare, of Dean Crescent, pitched up outside the new store at 10.30pm on Wednesday and won a hamper for her efforts.

She said: “It’s great for me as it’s just around the corner. I like Aldi and it can’t be beaten on prices.”

The store was officially opened by the Mayor of Warrington Clr Ted Finnegan with Wolfie also making an appearance to celebrate the shop’s opening.

Clr Finnegan said: “I think the people around here will really benefit from this store. It has had a lot of interest and it is well thought out by Aldi.”

The store, which can be located on the former Fordton Leisure Centre site, will be open from Monday to Saturday at 8am to 10pm and on Sundays from 10am to 4pm.

Aldi has recently hired 55 staff as part of its recruitment drive and is seeking a further 25 workers for its stores across the town.
