FOURTEEN homes could be built on a derelict site in Glazebury after a planning inspector overturned a council decision.
Warrington Borough Council threw out Kenton Whitaker’s plans to redevelop the former M&S discount warehouse store in Warrington Road in November 2013 due to it encroaching on the green belt.
But a Government appointed inspector has approved the four and five-bedroom home scheme.
Clr Chris Vobe, ward member for Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft, said that residents broadly welcomed the eyesore site being built on but are protective of the greenbelt.
He said: “There has always been support for renovating the former discount store site. We have always supported homes being built there.
“But there should be no negotiation on the green belt. Once the boundary is breached, it opens the floodgates for more.
“This has placed the open spaces throughout Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft under threat and ridden roughshod over the views of residents.”
