ONE of the most traditional events in town was marked at Saturday at the annual Bawming the Thorn ceremony.

Crowds came out to enjoy the sunshine as the parade made its way through the village of Appleton Thorn, before children from the primary school started the traditional dance around the thorn tree.

Historian Mark Olly was guest of honour on the day.

The day was first started in the 19th century but was revived 41 years ago and a sense of history was again injected into Bawming with a spitfire fly-past on Saturday.
