PICS ADDED: Swan found with crossbow bolts through neck near Fiddlers Ferry

A SWAN shot through the neck and in the head with a crossbow is set to make a miraculous recovery after receiving emergency treatment.

Police are appealing for information after the critically-injured swan was found by a member of the public on the canal between Fiddlers Ferry and Widnes.

The distressed bird  had also been shot several times with an air gun.

Alan Humphreys, of Village Vets, Woolston, treated the swan and says it should survive.

He said: "The swan was brought in as an emergency situation by the RSPCA on Wednesday evening.

"One of the cross bow bolts had gone through the trachea, causing significant difficulty in breathing.

"Had the bolt not been removed quickly the swan would have died.

"An emergency airway was put into the lung so that it could breathe with ease and the swan was then kept in an oxygen enriched environment overnight.

"The prognosis is looking good however there is a possibility of long term damage to the trachea.

"This is a particularly unpleasant attack on a defenceless animal which has lived in the local community for some time bringing pleasure to many who visit the area. "

The incident was reported at 4pm on Wednesday.

PC Natalie Ford of Warrington West Neighbourhood Policing Unit said: "By some miracle the swan was still alive and was rescued by the RSPCA.

"The swan had emergency surgery to have the crossbow bolts removed and is described as very poorly.

"We are urgently appealing for assistance from members of the public in Warrington and Halton to identify the offenders responsible.

"Anyone with any information should contact Cheshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 632 of 18 June 2014. Information can also be left anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111."

Patrols have been increased in the area as part of the investigation.

This is getting beyond a joke now something needs doing, first the swan in Ackers pit plus eggs and now this. I hope they catch who did this and lock them up there is just no need to do this to such lovely creatures. Kids from Warrington love feeding them bread and the ducks also, and some scumbag takes that away with a crossbow. I hope next time it backfires on you and sticks in your neck as it is clear you have failed in life to do such a horrible thing and as such wouldn't enter the mind of a NORMAL person which you are clearly not.!!!!!!

Please SHARE on Facebook...we need the people who did this caught and punished. The SCUM that did this need to be NAMED and SHAMED.In my ideal world they would have to be punished by the same method they did to this poor creature, but in this society we live it they will probably just get a fine & caution.

This truly disgusts me, how someone can go out with a crossbow and shoot it at a defenceless animal leaves me speechless. I agree that something needs to be done to protect our wildlife from harm as its now the second incident involving a swan to my knoledge. I certainly hope that Cheshire Police find the low life responsible for this and the courts send them away for as long as possible as there is no place in society for people like this!
I must urge anyone who has seen anyone with a crossbow recently or knows of someone who owns one to contact the police immediately because if they can do this to a swan god knows what else they can do.

We have swans where we live in Old Hall, and they are part of the community, people feed them and always make sure they are all ok along with their cygnets. How can anybody do this to a defenceless animal is beyond me. I hope they get found and locked up and the same thing done to them. So upset, hope you pull through beautiful.

What a moronic comment. I can't believe how many uneducated, racist people there are in Warrington.

Gordon, I believe the EEC hasn't existed since about 1993.

Incredible - Adjective: so extraordinary as seem impossible, not credible, hard to believe or unbelievable.

with regards to people saying we need more laws, it is illegal already to wander the streets with a crossbow, I don't see how more laws will help stop this?

NOT uneducated and racist, merely telling the truth! Eastern Europeans DO take and kill swans off rivers all over the country. Ask the RSPCA! They took a swan from the river near me and left its mate devastated. They were seen for days hanging abut with breadsticks and in our naivety we thought they were feeding the ducks, swans etc, even though they looked extremely shifty, and then one day this beautiful swan went missing and left its mate alone to grieve. The next day its mate vanished too. B y the time we realised what had happened these thugs had moved on. They also take fish out of season too and posters have to be put up every year to warn them off. So, I repeat NOT racist at all !!!

British people also commit such violent acts of thuggery in this country too, there are many examples of this all over the country. It seems strange to single out Eastern Europeans.
