POLICE are warning residents to keep homes secure during the warm weather to help prevent ‘sneak in’ burglaries.

Homeowners across the county are advised to stay security conscious even when they are at home.

Det Sup Andrew Mitchell, of Cheshire Police, said: "During warm weather, we tend to experience an increase in the number of opportunist ‘sneak in′ burglaries, where criminals take advantage of homeowners who have left windows open, patios unlocked and doors ajar.

"It is vitally important to have an awareness of your home security so criminals don′t exploit the opportunity of an open door or window to enter your home and steal your belongings.

"We remind residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police."

Residents should take note of the following advice:

• Make sure that all windows are closed and locked, even when you are at home or in the garden.

• Use the security measures on modern windows, which allow them to let some air in but still be locked.

• Keep all valuables out of the line of sight of prying eyes. Never put car keys or purses on window sills or in view of a window or door.

• Always avoid keeping large amounts of cash in your house.

If you have any information about burglaries or see anyone acting suspiciously in your neighbourhood, call Cheshire Police on 101.
