A TEAM of Priestley College students could see their hard work pay off after being announced as one of 18 finalists in the prestigious national Apps for Good Awards.

The awards celebrate the next generation of problem solvers and digital creators and students who have created an app that tackles an everyday problem or issue they are passionate about.

The Priestley students’ app, Sweg Messenger, which is designed to provide a unique and fun way to chat with friends, was shortlisted.

Student, Elliot McKenzie said: “We’ve been able to develop not only our computing skills, but job skills such as teamwork, problem solving and independence.

“Our app Sweg Messenger has been developed to provide a unique and fun way to chat with friends. We can’t wait to see the final result on awards day.”

The winners will be announced June 23, 2014 at the awards ceremony at the Barbican in London.

The winning schools in each category will then spend the following six months having their app professionally produced, before being launched to the public in January.
