RESIDENTS are being warned against cold callers claiming homeowners are owed a council tax rebate.
Warrington Borough Council say there have been reports of companies phoning taxpayers saying they can help with a rebate or revalued properties to a lower council tax band for a fee.
But it says that over-payments or re-branding issues can be dealt with for free.
Clr Russ Bowden, executive board member for corporate resources and assignments, said: “Residents don’t need to pay these fees. If anyone is entitled to a refund, the council will pay it. And if anyone’s property does need to be revalued, this can be arranged by contacting the local Valuation Office Agency.
“We are urging residents to be vigilant and please report it if you are unsure about what information you are being given.
“To report incidents of bogus callers, call the police on the non-emergency number, 101, and please call Warrington Trading Standards on 08454 040506.”
