AN 18-YEAR-OLD man was caught with a knife and cocaine in his pocket after police were called to a Birchwood street.

Benjamin Robinson, of Ireland Street, Longford, was captured by police on Violet Street at 4.30am on Sunday, May 11.

Halton Magistrates Court heard on Thursday how police were called to the road by residents who reported hearing men shouting to a neighbour to open their door.

Alison Warburton, prosecuting, said: “The defendant was found to be carrying a white powder in his jogging bottoms. He made an attempt to get away from the officer.”

After being captured police officers noticed he had a black handled knife in the back of his tracksuit bottoms.

In interview Robinson said he would take cocaine at the weekend with friends.

When asked why he was carrying it he said he did not think he would be getting stopped at that time of night but could not recall taking the knife.

Gary Heaven, defending, said on the night in question the defendant had been to a friends where they had taken cocaine.

“On leaving Robinson had stuck the cocaine in his pocket and for whatever reason the knife also went in the pocket,” Mr Heaven added.

“Only when the police arrived he realised the cocaine was there but also the knife and he move it.

“There was never any question of it being used.”

Robinson will be sentenced for possession of cocaine and possession of a bladed weapon at Warrington Crown Court at a later date.
