MEMBERS of a veterans association is joining the calls for the cenotaph on Bridge Foot to be relocated to a more suitable spot.

Campaigners have been calling on Warrington Borough Council to move the memorial to the soldiers from the town who died while serving for their country since 2005.

And as the debate opens up again on moving the cenotaph members from the Duke of Lancaster Regimental Association Warrington Branch are once again adding their voices to the call to move it to a more appropriate home.

Ron Bygate, aged 84, from Stockton Heath, spoke out about the change in location previously.

He said: “It looks isolated and forlorn in its current location. We had already asked for this more than seven years ago but the council never did anything about it.

“Nobody from the council really reacted to it, nothing else was heard about it.”

In its present spot the cenotaph is in a hard to reach location in the centre of the Bridge Foot island.

It means on Remembrance Sunday the area is shut down to accommodate the annual service honouring those who served in the armed forces.

But anyone wanting to take a visit to pay their respects at other times faces a perilous trip across the busy four lane carriageway.

The idea has since been mooted to move the cenotaph to Bank Park next to the Town Hall, which is undergoing regeneration work.

“We thought it could move to Queen’s Gardens but Bank Park would be fine too,” added Mr Bygate .”Anywhere really as long as it’s away from a main road.

“Trying to get to it at the moment you put your life in your own hands.

“It’s not plausible to have services or anyone wanting to visit it individually because of the location.

“If it was in Bank Park it would be ideal as people could visit it when they want to.”
