Man headbutted stranger in new Stockton Heath bar

First published in News

A MAN headbutted a stranger in a Stockton Heath bar because he was staring at him, a court heard.

David Leather, aged 29, of Causeway Avenue, Latchford, carried out the ‘unprovoked’ attack in the Slug and Lettuce, Grappenhall Road.

Halton Magistrates Court heard on Monday how Leather headbutted victim Jamie Mullen to his nose, causing bruising and swelling.

Sarah Gray, prosecuting, said he was thrown out by door staff and arrested.

The incident happened at 1am on Saturday, April 19.

During the police interview, the court heard Leather said Mr Mullen had barged into him earlier that evening in the Mulberry Tree, London Road.

Then, in the Slug and Lettuce, the victim was ‘smiling and staring’ at him.

“He said the complainant took a step towards him and he felt threatened, and immediately headbutted the complainant,” said Mrs Gray.

“He said he felt ashamed and embarrassed by his actions.”

The court heard Leather owns his own construction business, and is due to be married on June 6.

The defendant, who has no previous convictions, was ‘under stress’ from ‘relationship and family matters’ at the time of the incident.

Magistrates adjourned the hearing for a pre-sentence report to be carried out.

I think, and this won't be popular, that it's an OK place but that people assume it's nicer than it is because it's not a dump like some other parts of Warrington. I also get the impression that a lot of people, including some in the council, would be happier if it were.

Well obviously everybody in the North of Warrington is a doley, thieving, violent chav and all those in the South are chablis-swilling toffs. It would just be crazy to assume things are far more complicated than that :)

Personally speaking people like it or not people come to Stockton Heath because its viewed as a nicer part of Warrington or Runcorn .
But generally in my experience it's usually people from outside the area who cause the trouble, not the people who live there.
I know my friends & I who live there and in Appleton don't behave in that way and want a peaceful, enjoyable night out with like minded individuals, that's why we avoid the town centre and so many other parts of the town.

Our problem is that people from "the other side of the water" can't afford to live here but can afford, every now and then, to drink here! Coming from Orford I would be surprised if you could do either. Maybe your one of them that goes to Tesco on Winwick road to get slapped while purchasing your white lightning.

I come from Orford and take great offense to your remark.
Stockton Heath is just another village surrounding Warrington.
Residents of SH and Orford are both just as likely to cause oroblems when landlords if this town are permitted to fuel these people with cheap booze.
If the landlord stopped this practise and controlled entry to those under the influence these incidents wouldn't happen.
