THE RSPCA say they are treating the disappearance of a male swan and seven eggs as suspicious.

The swan and its seven eggs disappeared overnight on Saturday at Ackers Pit in Stockton Heath.

Keen ornithologists raised the alarm on Sunday when they found only the female swimming around the water looking for her mate and eggs.

A spokesman for the RSPCA said: "The incident has been reported to the RSPCA and we are treating it as suspicious. If anyone has any information as to what has happened we would urge them to call the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.

"It is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act for anyone to take a swan or its eggs from the wild, or to move or interfere with a swan's nest while it is in use."
