IT was her grandparent’s battle with cancer that inspired 11-year-old Eve Dolphin Timmins to head out to Ireland to take part in a gruelling charity trek.

The Beamont Primary School pupil, from Orford, has witnessed firsthand the devastation that the disease can cause so has decided to do something about it.

Kind-hearted Eve, along with her dad Jay Timmins, aged 41, uncle Kevin Linehan, aged 50, and granddad, Jim Linehan, aged 57, faces the toughest challenge she has encountered when she climbs Croagh Patrick in County Mayo.

She said: “I’m ready for it. I have been doing lots of walking and I know my family will help me out on the day.

“I wanted to do it because I wanted to raise as much money as I can for Cancer Research UK.

“My family in the past has been affected by cancer and I know how hard it can be.”

Eve’s mum Lindsey fills up with pride when she thinks about her daughter’s decision to climb the 2,507ft mountain on May 9.

“I was really taken a back when she told me she wanted to do it. No one pushed her into it. I am so proud of her for wanting to do something like this,” said Lindsey.

On average, it takes about two and a half hours to reach the summit and one and a half hours to descend.

But with Eve braving the climb with some of her family members by her side, Lindsey is not worried about the challenge her daughter has ahead of her.

She said: “Her uncle has done it before so he knows what he’s doing. I think they are all just looking forward to it.”
