TRIBUTES have been paid to the former secretary of the Warrington District Rugby League Association after she lost her brave battle with cancer last night, Wednesday.

Hilary Steel, who was awarded an MBE in 2009, stepped down from the role in October last year due to serious illness and died surrounded by her family at St Roccos.

Jackie Files, north west youth league secretary, said: “Hilary fought a very brave, spirited battle yet sadly this one even Hilary could not beat.”

Speaking in 2013, the Orford rugby stalwart said in her resignation letter she hoped to emulate Steve Prescott who was given only months to live but managed to do ‘wonderful things’ in the years since and hoped to see Warrington Wolves win more cups and trophies.

Leave your tributes to Hilary below.

Sad news and a great loss to Warrington ARL and the North West Rugby League. Such a strong woman in many ways. Hilary was a good friend and was always there for support and advice. She will be sorely missed by many, Rugby League has lost a real legend. Deepest sympathies to her family at this sad time. RIP H xxx

Hilary was also an outstanding head teacher of Irwell Road Infant School. She was a good friend of many of us in education and a fun person too. I am very saddened to hear of her death. Both education and rugby league have lost a good friend.

I never met Hilary, but what an inspirational person she was. In these days of vastly overpaid sportsmen, she gave her all to the amateur sport, without financial gain and I should imagine it cost her money. Sincere condolences to her family at this sad time. R.I.P. Hilary

I would have been there late 80s, early 90s, maybe before she started then
