WILL you be tucking into fish this Friday?
Traditionally, the Catholic church treats Good Friday as a fast day with residents swapping meat for fish.
But Warrington Market fishmonger Brenda Osborne says in her 35 years working on the V. Reardon and Sons stall she has seen the number of people buying fish ahead of the Easter weekend drop by half.
She added: “We’re still busier than normal the day before Good Friday but it’s nothing like the way it used to be where there would be five of us constantly serving people from 8.30am.
“We never stopped.
“The market is closed on Good Friday but you tend to see what I call fancier fish like seabass and salmon being popular on Easter Saturday.
“In my mum and dad’s era fish on Good Friday was religious but I don’t think younger people think that way now and traditions are going out of the window.”
