THE secret to a long and happy life is a mild beer and a drink or two from the top shelf claims Old Hall resident Charles Oldham, who celebrated his 100th birthday today, Tuesday.

The father of three, who moved to Warrington from Salford in 1982, joked that he has been ‘skint but happy’ during his life.

Charles, who has five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, recalls his time with his wife of 56 years Alice, who died 10 years ago, as being one of the happiest times of his life, describing their relationship as nothing short of ‘fantastic’.

The former marine, who also worked as a painter and decorator before working at a post office in Manchester, celebrated his birthday surrounded by friends and family at The Maltings on Old Hall Road - a regular haunt for Charles.

His son, David said: “He was a great father and is good with all the grandchildren. He was one of the very first founders of Sunday league football in Salford.

“He is still full of life and has a sense of humour. You wouldn’t think he has just turned 100.”
