EACH month we will be highlighting the work of one of the town’s charities making a difference.

This month we look at Harry and Co and their work supporting Warrington Hospital’s maternity bereavement services.

OPENING a newly refurbished room for parents with youngsters born on the neonatal ward is the latest step in the charity Harry and Co growing from strength to strength.

After setting the cause up in October 2010 following the still birth of their son Harry, Old Hall couple Chris and Kate Tinker have been working hard to provide an ‘enhanced bereavement service’ for families going through the same thing.

And following on from their good work improving the maternity bereavement suite, staff on the neonatal ward were keen for them to help transform their parents’ room which was officially opened by charity patron and Warrington Wolves player Ben Westwood.

Debbie Yates, bereavement lead midwife, said: “It’s mainly a functional room for parents to gain confidence before they go home with their baby and help them start breastfeeding but has also been used after bereavements.

“Kate did such a good job with the refurbishment of the labour room and was willing to help again and install new soft furnishings, a bed, chair and wardrobe.

“A family told us recently it had given them the privacy and quality time needed with their son during the final hours of his life away from the machines on the neonatal ward.

“The room means better care for our families and it’s great to know we have got the charity behind us 100 per cent.”

Dad-of-two Ben Westwood said he is always happy to support the cause after the England international and partner Debbie lost their baby girl Olivia at 23 weeks pregnancy.

He added: “Having gone through it ourselves, the charity is close to mine and Debbie’s hearts.

“There was nothing like this when it happened to us and when we first found out about Kate and what she went through we jumped on board to help.

“Hopefully the money from my testimonial year will help her achieve what she wants and we will always be here to help.”

Kate added it was fabulous to know the room had been put to such good use and things were going ‘up and up’ for the charity.
