WARRINGTON Borough Council should continue to push Peel Ports to paint the swing bridges in the town.

The issue of the swing bridges was brought up by Clr Celia Jordan (LD - Stockton Heath) at a full council meeting last Monday.

Clr Jordan said: “The bridges create a very poor visual impression of Warrington as they lie on the ‘gateways’ into the town. They are covered with rust and look awful.”

Clr Linda Dirir (LAB - Penketh and Cuerdley), executive member for highways, transportation and climate change, said: “We have been asking for this for the last two years. It’s been an agenda item on every meeting I have had with them.

“Each bridge would cost between £300,000 and £500,000 to paint they say and they have not budgeted for this.

“It seems to me far too high.”

Clr Jordan replied: “I am pleased the council has this topic on the agenda when they meet with Peel.

“There must be cheaper options, which could be considered.

“You have to wonder if they are spending enough on maintenance.

“Surely we haven’t got to wait until the structure rusts right through and a bridge falls into the water before they take some action.”
