WATCHING her son play rugby for Warrington Wolves on Sunday is the best Mother’s Day present she could ask for.

Chris Hill’s mum, Carol, has watched her son’s dreams come true as his career as a professional rugby league player has gone from strength to strength.

From the seven-year-old rugby enthusiast who would return home coated in mud to his first cap for England, Carol has been there - cheering him on - every step of the way come rain or shine.

Along with her husband, Dave, the couple could not be any more proud of their son, who has been playing for Warrington since he moved from Leigh in 2011.

She said: “It is great to see him doing something he loves and to achieve what he has. It is a privilege to play sport and be paid for it and Chris knows that.

“He knows he’s lucky but he had worked hard to achieve what he has.”

Carol has spent many weekends braving the wind and rain to watch her son play rugby and can count on one hand the number of games she had missed but has lost count of the number of muddy kits she has washed.

“My washing machine used to be on all the time,” remembered Carol. “I used to do three or four loads a day when he was younger and there was always a mud trail where he had walked through the house.

“Thankfully, I only have to do three or four a week now.”

Not that she ever minded, Carol has never relented in her support for Chris or his older brother, Marc.

“They have both achieved so much in different ways. I am so proud of them both,” she added.

Prop Chris, aged 26, is looking forward to the match at the weekend and admits he wouldn’t have been able to do it without the support from his parents.

Chris said: “Both my mum and dad have always supported me throughout my career - standing in muddy fields, cheering me on.”

Chris also had nothing but praise for his fiancé Kathryn O’Neill, who are parents to Connor, aged five, and Oliver, aged one.

“She is a fantastic mother and she comes to both home and away games with the kids.”
