WORK to put a new barrier along the M56 around Lymm will start this weekend.

The £2.86m project will see the old steel central reservation barrier replaced with a concrete one.

According to the Highways Agency, concrete barriers are safer, stronger and more robust and are unlikely to require repairs after vehicle impact.

Drainage improvements and carriageway resurfacing will also be taking place. The work is due to be completed by May 16.

The motorway will remain open but with lane closures and a 50mph speed limit.
