A GROUP of big-hearted fundraisers will not be walking alone as they head to Sheffield in memory of the 96 Liverpool fans who lost their lives during the Hillsborough disaster.

‘Team Hillsborough’ from Culcheth will be setting off from Sheffield Wednesday’s ground, where the tragedy occurred in 1989, and walking 96 miles over three days to Liverpool football club’s Anfield stadium on April 11.

The 14-strong group will be taking on the gruelling challenge to honour the lives lost at Hillsborough and raise cash for The Hillsborough Family Support Group and Warrington Youth Club.

A spokesman for the team, which have been carrying out training runs finishing at The Village Club in Culcheth, said they all have their own personal reasons for walking.

Wayne Rankin added: "I could have been at Hillsborough, I had a ticket but was held up at work.

“Thankfully my friends came back safe but since 'the truth' was finally outed in 2012 I have wanted to remind people that there is still justice to be served.

“This walk is a way for me of showing my never-ending support and maintaining local awareness."

Selena Ledgerton said she wanted to take part as her grandfather was at the match that day.

She added: “He helped pull people up to the terrace above and all I can remember was our overwhelming fear for his safety.

“We still have his ticket and my mother raised money for the Justice for the 96 campaign.

“Even though she was terminally ill by 2012, she was over the moon to hear the result (that the original inquest verdicts for victims of the Hillsborough tragedy would be quashed and a new police inquiry would take place) and when we laid my father to rest he wore a black shirt with just the word ‘Justice’ across it in white.

“I'll be walking in honour of the 96, for those who saved lives that day and all who have campaigned for them."
