A WOMAN has died after her car went into the canal in Stockton Heath.

Police, paramedics and fire crews rushed to the incident at 4pm today, Wednesday.

The car went into the Manchester Ship Canal at the junction of Egerton Street and Ellesmere Road, according to officers.

One witness has reported a loud sound of a car engine before the incident. Another witness said they saw an old woman driving a car which swerved before going in the water.

Two members of the public jumped into the water to help before the emergency services arrived according to witnesses.

Police divers went under the water and found the woman around 5.50pm. She was taken to the banks of the canal by a fire service boat and was taken to Warrington Hospital in a critical condition.

However police have now confirmed she has died. There are no more details about her.

There were four fire engines at the scene, along with police officers and an ambulance.

Police closed Egerton Street and Ellesmere Road. They set up a cordon in the area from Brackley Street back along Ellesmere Road to London Road.

Thelwall New Road was also closed as part of the response.

The roads are all now reopened.
