A SERVICE to mark a vital battle in the Boer War was held on Sunday.
Veterans gathered in Queen’s Gardens to commemorate the 114th anniversary of the Battle for Pieter’s Hill.
On Februrary 27, 1900, members of the 1st Battalion The South Lancashire Regiment were involved in the battle.
Led by Lt Colonel McCarthy O’Leary, whose statue stands in the gardens, it was a charge of resolution and courage.
Lt Colonel O’Leary led the charge with the words ‘Remember, the eyes of Lancashire are watching over you.”
He was killed along with three of his men at the moment of victory.
The service, which was attended by Mayor Clr Peter Carey and led by former Rector of Warrington Michael Finlay, included the last post and the laying of wreaths.
