Warrington protestors hit streets against Atos

Warrington Guardian: Campaigners outside Atos's Tannery Court centre Campaigners outside Atos's Tannery Court centre

PROTESTORS including councillors and residents took part in a national day of demonstrations against Atos, the benefits assessment agency.

The group assembled yesterday outside Atos's town centre based Tannery Court assessment centre where disabled people are reviewed for their capability to work.

Among those protesting was Clr Kevin Bennett (LAB - Fairfield and Howley) and said: "We are calling on the government to stop this degrading policy and introduce a fairer transparent system that restores dignity to the sick and disabled.

“Over 40 per cent of cases where people have been deemed fit to work, and had their benefits cut have had their appeals upheld. However the appeals process can take months while some of the most vulnerable disabled are plunged into poverty.

“There have also been questions over the application of their tests, with claims that people are being wrongly recommended for work, or put through stressful medical interviews.

“The tests do not take into consideration the complex nature of peoples illnesses, particularly for those with mental illness and this has led, in some cases, to those with long-term degenerative and terminal illnesses, such as Parkinson's and cancer, being told they are fit for work."

A spokesman for ATOS said: "“We absolutely respect people’s right to peaceful protest and we are well aware that being assessed for benefit entitlement can be a difficult experience.

"However, lobbying against Atos Healthcare will have no impact on welfare policy.

"It is not, nor has it ever been, the role of Atos Healthcare to make decisions on who can or cannot receive benefits.

"We carry out assessments following strict guidelines and criteria written by Government.

"For the parts of the process we are responsible for, we work hard to treat people with care and respect and constantly improve our service.”

Your right and trust me I would have been there. I think what the Government are doing at the moment with people on benefits is an absolute disgrace. The problem you have is that the working community don's see it. Jobcentre are putting people on courses apprenticeships and training schemes and claiming that unemployment is down when it actually is not. It is costing millions of pounds of tax payers money putting people through these courses so that Mr Cameron can go on TV and say unemployment is down in this election year. I have even known people get a £40 food voucher and bus fares from the training companies for completing a course so God knows what they are charging the tax payer. I have even been told people are to work in A***s ( a well known high street store) as volunteers along side paid staff as it will look good on their CV. If they are daft enough to agree that's another person classed as employed when they clearly are not. The Government is fudging unemployment figures and trust me this is a fact!!!
Still Grumpy

it seems there are some things we can all agree on on this website after all. ATOS make me sick my partner is disabled and the stress she was put under after failing her last medical had massive knock on effects that included a HUGE breakdown and a long stay in hollins park. needles to say when we had out tribunal the piece of paper that says the atos medial is void and put her back on ESA money was already sighed and on the desk in front of us before we even walked in the room we survived on hardly anything for 13 months during this ordeal. she has just been called back for another assessment its only been 13 month the judge said they must leave us alone while she recovers for at least 2 years ATOS are evil evil evil evil. and Iain duncan smith minister for manslaughter is there master they are his personal SS army

Iain duncan smith is a B......, He lives off his rich wifes back, He laid down the criteria for ATOS and is very happy for them to take the rap. When questions were asked in parliament the scumbag skulked out of the house like the low life rat that he is. The speaker of the house was disgusted, As was the nation. Remember all this come the general election and remember it was the other low life scumbag Clegge that put them into office. Not voting wont get rid of these self centred, Self important heathens.

That's right ATOS pass the buck "We carry out assessments following strict guidelines and criteria written by Government." you should have just came out and said "we are only doing our jobs". Shame on you... both you and the government have blood on your hands!

Great to meet everybody that attended yesterday well done!

"IT company Atos has confirmed it is seeking to end its government contract to assess whether benefits claimants are fit to work."

"In a statement, Atos pledged to carry on undertaking the tests until a new company was in a position to take over.

But the government said that standards at Atos had declined unacceptably."
